Fundamental skills
Most of the skills for kicking are similar to soccer. Passing skills are similar to basketball with a football pass being common. Drill: Practice football passes with partner to warm up arms.
- Drop kick: hold ball just above knees and drops straight down while taking step with left foot. Contact with right foot as ball touches ground. Drill: Practice drop kicks from a short distance between partners. Practice drop kicks at the field goal posts.
- Punt: Drop the ball with both hands and contact on the laces of the shoe.
- Kick up with two feet: converting a ground ball to an aerial ball. Hold ball firmly between insides of the feed and ankles. Jump in the air and lift feet up releasing ball to be caught. Drill: Practice kick ups with partner.
- Kick-up with one foot: As the ball rolls toward you, place the foot on the ground with the toe pointed toward the ball. When the ball contacts the foot, flip it up to be caught. Can also be done on a stationary ball by rolling the ball using the bottom of the foot and then quickly placing the toe under the ball to flip it up. Drill: Practice kick ups with partner.
Rules
- 11 players on each team
- Ball is slightly larger than a regulation soccer ball.
- Generally soccer rules apply when the ball is on the ground, basketball rules apply to aerial balls, and football rules apply in forward passing of the ball and scoring.
- Field goal (3 points): a ball passes between the goalposts and under the crossbar.
- Drop kick (2 points): Ball passes over the crossbar when drop kicked from outside penalty area.
- Touchdown (1 point): Offensive player passes the ball to a teammate who catches it behind opponents goal line.
- Penalty kick (1 point): Kicking the ball between goalposts and under crossbar from the 10 yard line. No player can be within 5 yards of the kicker.
- End goal (1 points): Offensive player who is in the end zone legally causes the ball to pass over the endline but not between the goalposts.
- Kick off is similar to soccer.
- Aerial (fly) ball: may be advanced with pass like basketball or football. If the ball is caught while stationary 1 step can be made before the throw. If caught while running, 2 steps can be taken.
- Ground ball: stationary, rolling, or bouncing ball that is in contact with the ground. May be played with any part of the body except hands. To touch again must be caught directly from a kick or a kick up.
- One overhead dribble is permitted. The ball may be tossed and any number of steps taken before catching it again.
- Goalkeeper governed by same rules as other players.
- Penalty enforcement: Violations such as traveling result in a throwin by the opposing team unless they occur in the end zone which will result in 1 penalty kick. Technical fouls result in a penalty kick. If it is not successful a touch back is awarded. Personal fouls such as holding, tripping, tackling, charging, or blocking result in 2 penalty kicks if they are in the penalty area and 1 penalty kick if outside the penalty area. If 2 kicks are awarded the second becomes a live ball if the kick is missed. If 1 kick is awarded, and the kick is missed, the team is awarded a touchback.
Strategy:
- Offensive formation: 5 forwards, 3 half backs, 2 full backs, and goalie.
- One-on-one defense is most often used.
Speedball may be adapted for indoor use. The 2 point drop kick goal would not be applicable and an indoor soccer ball would be best to use.
