Basketball Strategy Outline

Motion offense is a free lance system used mainly against man-to-man defense.

Principles of motion offense:

  1. Pass and screen away from ball
  2. Give teammates time to use their screens
  3. Keep balanced floor

Zone Offense Principles

  1. Attack seams of zone between players.
  2. Any pass can be followed by quick cut to basket. If pass is not available cutter continues through and moves to spot on opposite side of court. Other offensive players rotate over to fill empty spaces.
  3. Players may cut to open spot at high or low post.
  4. If a wing player is overplayed by defense use back door cut.

Man-to-man defense principles

  1. Pressure the ball.
  2. Always have 3 people guarding the ball.
  3. Always see the ball and the person guarding
  4. 1 pass away deny, 2 passes away foot in key.

Shell Drill: Set up offensive players around 3 point line with defensive players guarding each. Demonstrate the proper rotation when each offensive player has the ball. Speed up passes and defense must respond.

Zone defenses: Guard the area. Find a person to box out.

  • 2-3: Good against team with no outside shooters.
  • 1-2-2: Stops team with outside shooters. Vulnerable to high post.
  • 1-3-1: Pressure the ball and trap. Vulnerable on baseline.
  • Box and 1: Stop one player.
  • Presses
  • 1-3-1 Half court: Encourage opponents into corners and trap. Players rotate to steal passes.
  • 2-2-1 full court: Trap on sides of court.
