Maintenance Concerns
As a school physical educator, coach, or athletic director there are 3 very important people you must befriend and maintain good relations with: the principal, head of maintenance, and your custodian.
Outdoor Maintenance
- Baseball field: Softball vs. Baseball. Grass infield or artificial turf. Type of fence. Layout and design of entire field. Mowing and dragging field.
- Soccer field: Place, size.
- Football field: Size. Goal posts.
- Tennis courts: Cleaning. Care for nets. Cover?
Turf management: Seek special help
- Sample soil
- Sprinkler system
- Fertilize early and late and aerate
- Who mows?
Outdoor facilities depend on program needs.
Safety: level ground, break away bases, types of fence, goal posts.
Equipment needed: Tractor, rakes, long ruler, golf cart, gator.
Layout of fields: Measure in triangles to make square (345 rule), chalk or paint?
Storage of outdoor equipment: Soccer goals, shed.
Playgrounds: safety is a huge concern. Security list in book on page 134.
Indoor Maintenance
Maintenance list: Make a prioritized list. Takes special attention to details and hazards. Safety issues should be prioritized first.
When taking a new job, take pictures of facility areas before and after improvements.
Wood floor refinishing: Every other summer? Adding new lines.
Cleaning types of surfaces: Wood floor, field house, lobby.
Custodian work: Don’t leave anything to chance that can be managed. Do everything possible to hold onto the good custodian.
